The Liberty Bell was chosen as a symbol because it represents the founding of the United States of America, it's triumphs and it's sins. The Liberty Bell symbolizes the American Revolution and American freedoms valued by people the world over. The bell was rung in Philadelphia, PA in July, 1776 to summon citizens to hear the first public reading of the US Declaration of Independence and was later adopted as a symbol by abolitionists in their effort to end slavery in America.
"Proclaim Liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof." Inscription on the bell taken from Leviticus 25:10.
The American Liberty Bell is famous for having a large crack that has rendered it unringable and mute. This crack is symbolic of the original sin of the United States, the racism, slavery, and genocide upon which the nation was built. The legacy of racism continues to this day and undermines the promise of liberty and freedom for many American citizens.
Cannabis prohibition is a legacy of institutional racism and is born from the same legal framework as Jim Crow and segregation.
Our Liberty Bell has no crack, instead there is a cannabis leaf symbolizing healing. The inscription on our Liberty Bell is taken from Revelations 22:2, "the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations."
We believe that cannabis can help us overcome the differences between our tribes and nations and help us find peace with each other and with the Earth.
WE CHOOSE THE NAME LIBERTY BELL TEMPLE - in commemoration of a series of protest NJ Weedman & Patrick Duff held in Philadelphia in 2002-03 these two freedom fighters deliberately engaged in the religious consumption of cannabis in order to create a federal religious marijuana case.
